**Macau**
Macau is one of the two Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Situated 40 miles from the coast of Hong Kong, Macau encompasses only 12 square miles and has a population of 600,000. As an SAR, it shares foreign policy and defense with the PRC but has different laws in other areas. Macau is the only area of the PRC where gambling is permitted, and it has been legal since the 19th century. The regulatory body for land-based gambling in Macau is the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DIJC).

The Hong Kong Jockey Club holds an exclusive right to all sports betting and lottery activities, encompassing both online and offline operations. Foreign websites operating illegally in China frequently offer more favorable odds and payouts. It is against the law for Chinese bettors to access these foreign websites from within China, to transfer funds from China to foreign websites, and for foreign websites to receive funds from Chinese bettors.
The Chinese administration is highly rigorous concerning wagering. They prohibit online platforms, and financial institutions are forbidden from facilitating gambling transactions. Violating these regulations can result in imprisonment. Furthermore, utilizing foreign currency within China presents significant challenges.
Despite its illegality, a substantial portion of the Chinese population engages in online gambling. They favor foreign platforms over China’s domestic sports lotteries. Numerous entities facilitate gambling activities, defying the existing prohibitions. Some of the world’s most prominent gambling enterprises derive substantial revenue from China.
These companies employ cunning strategies to circumvent the regulations. They frequently modify their website addresses. Entities that handle funds between gamblers and gambling websites also utilize these tactics. Certain Chinese banks even surreptitiously aid these companies, hindering the government’s efforts to curb their operations.
