Portugals digital wagering marketplace witnessed robust expansion in the initial trimester of 2023, with earnings escalating by 24.8%.
As per data procured from the Portuguese Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ), aggregate gross gaming revenue (GGR) derived from online wagering and gaming attained €196.4 million (£169.4 million/$209.7 million), signifying a 24.8% surge from the corresponding period in 2022. This figure marginally surpasses the €195.3 million documented in the concluding quarter of 2022.
Online sporting wagers GGR constituted €85.7 million of the overall sum, while other digital activities contributed €110.7 million.
Total stakes positioned on sporting wagers during the trimester amounted to €441.4 million, reflecting a 3.8% decline from the final quarter of 2022 but a 19.5% year-on-year upswing. Other digital gambling stakes aggregated €2.97 billion.
Soccer emerged as the most heavily wagered-upon sport, accounting for 70.6% of all sporting bets. Basketball and tennis collectively represented 25% of wagers.
The SRIJ further observed that as of March 31, 2023, a total of 166,300 players were registered on Portugals self-exclusion roster.
Brick-and-mortar gambling exhibited consistent performance in the initial quarter, with aggregate GGR reaching €65.9 million, marking a 1.7% decrease from the final quarter of 2022. However, this represented a 22.2% year-on-year upswing.
Non-banked gaming, encompassing poker tournaments and bingo, generated GGR of €998,490, demonstrating a 50.3% year-on-year rise.
Gaming machines generated a total of nine million euros in gaming revenue, a fifteen point nine percent increase. The remaining fourteen million euros came from table games, excluding poker and bingo, at brick-and-mortar casinos.
